Henry Horatio Hobson, Salford bootshop owner and drinker of ale, has a problem. He is happy to marry off his two younger daughters, Alice and Vickey, but what about his oldest, Maggie? She runs his shop and under all of his boasting and lecturing, he knows it.
Maggie is determined to find her way out from her father, with quick wit and clear eyed ambition, oh, and a certain talented bootmaker.
